WEIGHT LOSS is possible by eating apples as they are considered complex carbohydrates. These help keep you fuller longer as they take longer for the body to digest. Other foods in this category include brown rice, brown pasta, wholegrains, and other fruits. In comparison to simple carbohydrates, like cookies, white bread, soda, sugary drinks, which we digest quicker. This quicker digestion leads to rummaging in the cabinets and refrigerator for something else to eat. Complex carbohydrates also boost our energy levels, aggravating movement off the couch. If you’re off the couch, hopefully you’re outside running, jogging, walking the dog, pickle balling or hitting the gym.
In my research, there are four doctors that eating an apple a day may keep you from seeing often or not at all: endocrinologist, cardiologist, pulmonologist and gastroenterologist.
ENDOCRINOLOGIST: as mentioned earlier apples are complex carbohydrates. These carbohydrates aid in better digestion, which help balance our glucose or sugar levels, fostering weight loss. FOR MORE information on my view of simple vs complex carbohydrates, please view my video on YOUTUBE: judiljones@BETTERTIPSFORYOU entitled KEEPING FULLER LONGER.
CARDIOLOGIST: apples are high in soluble fiber, a fiber that dissolves better in water. This helps keep our bad cholesterol or LDL low and our good cholesterol or HDL, high. TIP: try hard not to peel the skin from the apple as the skin contains half the fiber.
PULMONOLOGIST: apples can keep your lungs happy because they contain betacarotene, antioxidants and vitamins c and e. Not SMOKING as we all know, keeps our lungs even happier.
GASTROENTEROLOGIST: apples, due to their high water and fiber content, especially the fiber pectin, promote gut motility. This helps lower the risk of constipation by moving our bowels better.
However, there is one doctor you should consider seeing at least annually for a routine checkup. This is your primary care provider. You may feel well on the outside, but unless bloodwork and some diagnostic images are done at least annually, like an ekg or a chest xray, you do not really know how your body is faring, particularly as you get older.
I try and eat at least one to two MCINTOSH (my favorite because they are easier to bite into and give a slightly sweeter taste) apples a day. I find I enjoy them most after a meal or during the day as a pick me up.
CONSIDER DISPLAYING YOUR FRUIT IN THIS LOVELY WIRED BASKET. A FRUIT DISPLAY NOT ONLY INVITES EATING IT BUT DISCUSSING IT.
